FANS FIRST & OUR FAN AWARD

Scotland and Strachan

There were touching scenes after Gefle IF’s win over Kalmar FC in Sweden in midweek when the players made sure to celebrate their victory with the most important man in the stadium. This fan is rewarded with an away win as he is the only one to make the 700 mile round trip top see his team in action.

The Silent President

The SRU President recently called on all his clubs to vote for changes in the rules that would allow inward investment for both Glasgow and Edinburgh Rugby. Given all the major issues that surround football in Scotland, it is surprising that we only get silence from the SFA President. If this is a real role then the President should be visible and heard or if it is ceremonial role then let the fans vote on who can represent us. With all due respect to Mr Alan McRae we think Sir Alex Ferguson or Kenny Dalglish would do a better job.

Gay players not on the football landscape anytime soon

Most sports fans in Scotland say they would be comfortable with their club signing a gay player, according to a BBC survey.

It found 82% of supporters would have no issue with a gay player. However, 8% of football fans said they would stop watching their team  if it had gay players!  This is a concern for all of us involved in the game who believe in equality and we salute Gary Lineker  for speaking about it. We at the SFSA recently met with Stonewall Scotland and have pledged to work together over the coming years to make our sport more inclusive. Look out for some campaigns coming soon.

Our love of the Bookies

Scottish Football has failed to attract blue chip companies to its sponsorship roster over the past 5 years with most of the available sponsorships now been taken by various bookmakers. It is a sad reflection of how poorly our game is marketed to the wider world that we only seem to attract bookies. This sector will also be facing its own challenges soon with the UK government have announced a review of the gambling industry.

West Ham: MP says club should play behind closed doors if violence is repeated. No doubt this will be watched with interest here in Scotland as the outcome from clubs discussions with the Scottish Government  is pending. The Scottish Govt want strict liability imposed and clubs don't.
